Theo stared at the man for a moment when he made his offer, and then his face broke out in a wide grin. When Theo smiled like that, it was quite a sight to see. His whole face was involved, every feature lighting up with genuine happiness. "Thankyou" He said to the man "I would like that. I would like that a lot" Right from the start, once he had started to adjust at least somewhat to what had happened, he had been watching the mini-dragons and wondering how it was that people went about getting one of their own. He liked the firelizards and they seemed like good companions as well as being trainable to be quite useful in performing various tasks. The company would be welcome to him, specifically on the nights when the knowledge that he might well never see home again sat heavy upon his mind.

"It's settled then," Layne said firmly, reaching way up to ruffle the lad's hair. "Once she's done her thing we'll see which egg is biggest and I'll put it in a jar and in your care." He smiled brightly and did a little dance, ignored by his massive mount, who merely snorted as he was led along, the bells on his tack jingling merrily with each movement.
"Master Layne!" The call came from one of the Healers, who was smiling. "Why am I not surprised to see you here?" "You know me, Joana. I go where there's people gathered, be it official or not," Layne responded cheerfully, and the young lass chuckled. Motioning them to follow her, eyeing Theo's arm carefully with the professionalism of her Craft, she led them to an area where Layne could tie his mount. "So laddie. Any ideas what you might want to get into here?" he asked gently, his eyes curious, but also neutral. He didn't wish to upset Theo, after all.

Theo laughed when the man reached up to ruffle his hair, actually going so far as to lean down a little so that he could reach. He watched the healer eye his arm and just gave her a smile and a waggle of his fingers. He was fine, he was doing what they had told him and resting his shoulder as much as possible. He hadn't slipped the leash of the sling which held him back, despite his want for something, anything to occupy himself with.
"Back home I'm what we call a Mechanic. I work with metal and machines, putting things together, fixing things when they go wrong. I think, once I'm healed, I might see about working with the smiths. I don't know how much of what I know can be translated into the things you have here, but at least it's something similar to what I've been trained in" Thinking, Theo reached into his pocket and pulled out a watch. He'd been surprised when he'd learned that Serenity actually had some of her pocket-watches still. The one he had given her hadn't been much of a surprise, given it was her favorite thing to wear, but the others had been. Theo'd had to make several promises to be careful with it before she had been willing to let him borrow one of the others. They were battery powered and Theo didn't know how long they would last, and knew that as long as they were here, once the batteries ran out there would be no way to get them working again. But for now it kept time for him and he could use it as an example of one of the things he was thinking of doing.
Holding it out to show to the merchant, the watch fit snugly in the center of Theo's palm. "This is a watch" He told the man "Specifically what we call a pocket-watch." Popping open the protective front, he showed the merchant the ticking hands and the numbers of the simple white background. "It's a time-keeper. Watches and clocks, which are bigger versions which are meant to sit on or against a wall rather than be carried around, putting them together was a hobby for me back home. This one here, it will eventually stop counting time because of the way it's powered. But I know how to make a much older style, one which doesn't need one of our power sources to work. My sister has one which I fixed up for her as a present once. If I can learn enough to make the parts with the things the smith's have available, or find someone who can make them for me, I can put these together"

The Merchant listened curiously, his head cocked ever so faintly. The impression was almost of a small bird eyeing something it found interesting, but the slight tilt had a double purpose. It showed Theo he was indeed listening, but it also allowed him to keep his ear tilted towards where Anna was clutching in case something went wrong and the Pearl needed him.
"A Mechanic, huh? New word. One specific to your world I imagine, seeing as all we have here are Smiths." He smiled as the boy continued, examining the watch without removing it from the boy's hand. Hmm.... "If you could manage it, it would certainly be something unique," he said lightly, a gleam in his eye that showed his merchant's mind was at work. "The Holders, especially would love it. They'd probably pay good Marks for one of those."
