"Who knows," J'mael said mildly as he sheperded them out. "She wanted to keep one herself," he added, chuckling, and Aura nodded.
"I was surprised she DIDN'T, actually..." the girl replied, and J'mael shrugged, theen waved as they wandered off towards the Dining Caverns as instructed. "We need to get these guys to heat," she said quietly, pacing forwards eagerly. She knew which egg she wanted from the clutch, and was eager to separate it from both its siblings and the curious eyes of observers. She didn't wish it stolen, after all. Humming softly as they inside, she kneeled down beside the hearth and placed the bag there, then looked up as Joana came in. Though the Healer was frowning at her, it didn't reach her eyes, which were smiling, and she held two baskets of sand as well, one of which was offered to each of them. "Thank you," Aura said shyly, and the Healer smiled.
"Orti said you didn't push yourself," she said lightly. She then watched as Aura, instead of putting just one egg in the basket, placed all but her chosen one in it and set it beside the hearth, to get the maximum heat application. A flick of her fingers, and the Topaz on her shoulder abandoned it in favor of guarding the eggs, his pale golden hide gleaming softly, tail curled around the bundles. Aura's chosen egg was carefully half-buried in the sand in the bag, and she held it close to her chest. "Now, off with you two. Go care for your new babies," Joana said lightly, shooing them off with a smile.

Following Aura a step behind, they made their way to the Dining Caverns as they were instructed. When they arrived they were greeting with the healer Joana, carrying two baskets of sand. He had crouched beside Aura when she knelt by the hearth but when the healer approached them, he stood up stiffly and his face closed off out of habit. His father had not wanted the Earth doctors to know the real truth behind some of his 'accidents' and so had taught his son to keep his mouth shut and also how to lie convincingly. He did not like lying. There was no reason to lie now. But old habits died hard, and his stiffness near healers was one he might never outgrow. Seeing as how she handed him a basket of sand for his egg though, he bowed his head slightly in silent thanks and knelt down upon one knee. Careful to keep himself facing the thread healer, he very gently placed his egg in the sand after he had dug out a little hollow for it. Then he tenderly pushed the sand up around it to make it nice and cozy. With that done, he stood again with the basket held to his torso, glanced quickly to Aura and then spoke two words to the healer Joana. "Thank you." That was also habit. He was being polite and respectful to the doctor that had helped him. Not knowing what else to do or say, he just stood there at a loss. Where did he go now? Where was safe...for his egg?

The Healer didn't take offense, not having an issue with it. "You're welcome, dear," she said mildly, then glanced around them. "I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you left it in here until you find a safe place for it," the woman then suggested, before inclining her head, admonishing them both to be careful, and padded out. Aura smiled wryly and looked to Tobias with a smile.
"I really do like her. She's sweet, but she works so hard to make sure everyone is okay." She sighed softly and shook her head. "There's still so many of us in the Infirmary after all." Her eyes turned downwards to the bag she still held to her chest, and she then looked to him again. "I plan on keeping this in the Infirmary for now, since I don't have an actual ROOM yet. I'm not an official Candidate, so I don't have a barrack room for myself."

The healers was one of the better ones. They weren't pushy or in his face and nagging. Tobias appreciated that. And he also appreciated the woman's kindness. Her suggestion about leaving his egg here in the dining room did not sit well with him though. There were too many people coming and going. There were just too many opportunities for it to be harmed or stolen. Maybe no one would steal it here but his ability to trust others was not high. So for now, he thought maybe he'd ask the cook if he could keep it near the hearth in the kitchens.
Aura began to speak about the healer after the woman left and he nodded to acknowledge her words. "She's okay." He muttered a little. As for those in the infirmary he frowned slightly and his brows creased together briefly. He was hoping the others would get better soon. "Infirmary is a good place." He nodded and hoped that was true. It seemed like a quiet place most times. Then she said something he had not known and he had to ask. "Why aren't you a candidate? Have you decided not to be? Where do you stay?"
He wondered these things aloud as he took a step towards the kitchens. He didn't want to be rude but he also wanted to get his egg settled soon.

She padded along with him as he headed for the kitchens and gave a wry smile. "For now, the Infirmary is my home. Until my back is healed fully, I'm not allowed to Stand, per Joana's orders. I can still attend most of the Lessons, but only for informative purposes right now. I wasn't at the Egg Touching because of my wounds." She shrugged slightly, feeling the slight pull at her stitches. "My back was severely injured in the crash, and it almost killed me. So the Healers are being cautious. While I appreciate their concern, it's also frustrating, to know that there are eggs on the Sands and not be allowed a chance at them."
A soft sigh was heard as they continued, then she fell silent and merely watched as the Head Cook bustled over to them, inquiring as to why they were present, and pointing out lightly that neither was due in the kitchen for chores until later.

"I didn't know you were that injured. Sorry." He answered quietly. A hint of concern might be discernable if one listened close enough. "I'm glad you did not die." He added. And he meant it. He never would have met her if she had. He never would have gone egg-hunting. He never would have made a... was she a friend maybe? It was too soon to tell. He acknowledged her frustration with a nod of his head. It must be frustrating to want to do something and not be able to. He knew what that was like. He took note of her soft sigh and wished he could do something to help but there wasn't anything he could do. Healing took precedence over any other want. Perhaps he could keep her company while she healed? Maybe. If she didn't mind. Maybe not. He didn't want to be a pest and he wasn't used to interacting very much.
When the cook came bustling over, he gave them a slow smile and revealed to them his egg basket. "Got a place I can keep it safe?" He asked the cook.

"Yeah, me too," she retorted lightly, her green eyes sparkling, then turning sad. "Although I do wish so many HADN'T," she whispered as the cook came. When the lad spoke, the Cook grinned and motioned to the hearth.
"Aye lad, you can keep it over there for now," she said, her eyes curious. She'd seen flitter eggs before, and what the lad had was distinctly NOT. It was a little too small. She pushed the curiosity away and helped him settle it where the hearthrunner canines wouldn't get to it but where it would still get warmth, and then shooed them out, reminding them to be back later for their chores and that she needed to get lunch prepared for hungry people or else there'd be a riot. Aura chuckled and allowed herself to be shooed, tugging gently at Tobias' arm.
"It'll be okay. She won't let anything happen to it," she said confidently.

Tobias was relieved that the cook allowed him to keep his new-found prize safe near the hearth. He also appreciated her help getting it situated in the safest place. Being shooed out of the kitchens was bitter sweet. He would have stayed and offered his help but he also didn't mind spending more time with Aura either. So after hesitating, he relented and followed Aura out. He remembered what Aura had said about the others that had died and he had nodded with a somber feeling in his heart. It had been a terrible tragedy but it had also been an event that had changed his life...for the better.
As he left the kitchens he gave his egg basket near the hearth one more glance, then he departed with Aura's confident assurance in his ears.

Aura was about to say something when Orti sat up from where he'd been laying about her shoulders and chirped, giving her an image of his Person. The summons was clear, and Aura smiled faintly, then turned to Tobias. "I do apologize. I'm being summoned by Joana, probably to check I've not done something to my stitches. But I'll definitely see you around." She smiled assuredly, gave his shoulder a friendly pat, then turned and trotted off, not wishing to upset the Healer. That was never a good idea.
