All Candidates are to report to the common area of the Candidates Barracks for the next lesson.
The message was broadcast across the Weyr, and this was going to be an easy lesson for most of them, even the ones with more severe injuries. Making the robes, that's all that they were going to be doing this time. Lenara stood next to a table covered in different sized pieces of white cloth.
Iabureth reached her mind out to the healer Joana. The other off-worlders should be okay with this one. All Lenara is having them do is make their robes for Hatching day. She wanted to make sure that the healers knew there would be almost no danger in this lesson.
((I'm going to wait until everyone posts for an explanation, and after that it's going to turn into a do what you will thread.))

Joana's head rose from its current occupation-paperwork, how she hated it-as Iabureth spoke to her, her head cocking faintly. Nodding to herself, the Healer rose and paced out to where her charges were, checking them over. You will still be short a few, as not all of them are able to attend, but those who can I will send, she reassured the Aquamarine, then glanced over at Aura, who was seated and staring at the small basket near the hearth in the Infirmary. Whatever was in that egg she had found, it had brought out an amazing change in the girl. She'd gone from shy and unsure to outgoing, mothering and very protective of that little bundle.
Chuckling, she paced over to the girl and laid a hand on her shoulder. "I heard her," Aura said, and she cocked her head slightly. "I'm making sure it won't get cold." Joana smiled and waited, then gently shooed the girl out, reassuring her she'd have her Topaz watch over it while Aura and Orti attended the lesson. The girl nodded and trotted out, and Joana chuckled once more, then called for her flit, setting the little blue male to watch over the egg as she'd promised to.
------------------------------
Kaira was actually in the common room reading when the call came, and she merely set her book aside and watched the woman quietly, waiting for others to arrive. When Aura padded in, she smiled and nodded to the girl, who did the same, then seated herself as well. Isis crawled out of Kaira's pouch to watch as well, curious as ever, and eager to see what was going on.

Amelia was out and about, but thankfully, she was not too far from the Weyr proper when Iabureth summoned. She'd heard through the grapevine that a couple of Candidates had found a new creature, so of course, she had to go hunting. Luck wasn't on her side today. Still, she was in a pleasant mood as she set off for the barracks at a brisk trot. She hummed as she went, some old classic rock tune her father had loved. Now that she thought of it, she'd probably never hear its like played again. It gave her pause, a momentary hitch in her smooth stride.
She'd been thinking lately of all the things she missed about home, from the obvious to the inconsequential. It was bound to happen eventually, she figured. The simple gratefulness she felt for having her siblings here with her had simply delayed her turmoil for a time. Now that it had sunk in that they were stranded her permanently, she was beginning to feel homesick.
But that was best left for some other day. Today, she had lessons. Amelia paused to collect herself before entering the barracks, brushing a bit of grass from her threadbare jeans and sighing at the state of them. Before the crash they'd been her favorite pair, and now they were her only pair. Soon enough, they'd be relegated to cutoffs or simply scrapped. And that was yet another thing she'd miss.
Kaira was the only other Candidate present in the common area, so Amelia took a seat next to the former instructor. "Any idea what we're doing today?" she asked. She eyed the table of cloth curiously.
Navelon was, for once, not out in the garden. He'd been napping--or attempting to, as a very persistent pearl firelizard was fluttering in his face, demanding to be fed. He buried himself deeper in the furs, ignoring Shee's shrill calls. When the Aquamarine dragon spoke in his mind, however, he cursed and tossed the blankets aside. Shee gave a hopeful chirp, but he gently picked her up and set her on the cot. "Sorry, Shee. You'll have to fend for yourself today. I've got lessons."
He shrugged on the nearest tunic while his firelizard glowered. When she saw that her moodiness was to go unanswered, she promptly blinked between. Really, he ought to encourage her to hunt on her own more, but she so enjoyed being doted on. It was good for her, though, and if he did Impress, he'd have a lot less time to pick and choose morsels to feed the pearl. He hoped she would adjust quickly, in any event. Merc would likely have no problem, but Shee could prove jealous.
He entered the common room with a smile on his face, nodding to those already present. Seeing the cloths draped over the table next to Lenara, he groaned. "Oh, no," he complained, running his hands through his hair. "Why couldn't I have been born a Weaver's brat?" he questioned melodramatically. He was positively awful at sewing, as his robe from his last Hatching could attest.

"Ok ok I'm coming!"
Lazuli chirped insistently from his perch on Jenesys's left shoulder, his sharp little teeth nibbling on his ear. The call had come nearly ten minutes ago and still his human hadn't moved. Granted he was tending to Spring who had been happily swimming in the lake, but this was important too, he could tell. Spring was none too impressed with her flying brother and was draped around Jenesys's shoulders, her body still slick from the water as she nuzzled into his neck. Hurrying into the Barracks he spotted the group he was to meet and smiled.
"Sorry I'm late," he said as he took a seat and waited for the lesson to begin. The instant he sat Lazuli stopped chewing on his ear and instead began grooming his water loving sister.

Tag: Aura Tobias had been in the infirmary getting his hand wrapped. He'd lost his balance at the crash site and caught himself on something sharp. It wasn't a serious injury but it had required a couple stitches on his left palm and a wrapping of gauze. The amazing thing called numbweed had really soothed the ache. When the voice entered his head he jerked his head upwards and his focus went distant. All candidates were being called to the common room of the barracks. Knowing that look well, the healer that was tending to him gave him last minute instructions and sent him on his way.
Remembering the route, he arrived not too far behind some of the others. Seeing Aura there, he gave her a subtle nod of his head. His way of saying hello. Then he took a quick glance over the area. He noticed every detail. White cloth. Candidates wore white robes during hatching. From those two facts he had gathered that they might be sewing together their robes today. He did not know for sure so he took a place and waited to see how the instructions would be given.

Amelia/Navelon
Kaira glanced over as Amelia came over to her side and shrugged. "I couldn't tell you, honestly," she said with a wry smile. "I can make a GUESS, but that's all it would be." She continued to watch as others filed in, hiding a smile at some of their faces. Navelon's response had her outright chuckling, and she shook her head for his melodrama. "Oh come now, it can't be that bad," she said lightly, her hazel eyes glinting with unsounded laughter.
----------------------------------- Tobias
Aura glanced over as Tobias came in, inclining her head to him as well, then sliding around to stand near to him, Orti chirping a greeting to him. "How's your egg doing?" she asked him curiously, wondering if he was having any problems she might be able to assist him with. She'd also been keeping an eye on the other three in the Dining Caverns, which were mostly guarded by Joana's gold Topaz fire-lizard. She still didn't know what was IN them, and she'd been out exploring, searching for more holes under bushes like the one they'd originally found those in.

Tobias was a little surprised when Aura came to stand by him. It was nice though. He'd come to appreciate her as a person. She was pretty okay in his book. Okay, she was slowly becoming what he thought might be a nice friend. He didn't really have much experience with having friends but whatever she was, he liked it. He did not feel so uptight around her. It was good. As for her question on his egg, he gave her a tilted lip, a half-smile he hoped she would take as encouragement and said, "It's doing well. Left it for a time today to go out to the ...foxden. I was too busy thinking about it I slipped." He huffed a little under his breath to signify his exasperation with himself. He couldn't get this egg out of his head. He had no idea when it might hatch and so wanted to be near it as much as he could. He'd been chased away for a moment to go get some fresh air by a cook. Yes he kept his egg basket in the kitchens under the protection of a small table near the hearth. Seeing as how he was made to quit hovering for a while, he had gone to the crash site. A lot of good that did. And now he was still away from it at this lesson.
"Have any idea when it might hatch?" He whispered over to her.

.: Theodore :. Tag: Amelia & Kaira
Theo entered the room quietly. He had been in the kitchens when Iabureth called, feeding Kestrel and Hawk. The two were with him now, one on each shoulder. Given Theo's broad build, there was plenty of room for both of them, especially since they were still so young, and thus small. The pair of firelizards were growing swiftly though and Theo didn't think it would be long before they were big enough to start really fending for themselves. Not that they would ever need to. Theo doted upon the pair, though he did not hesitate to discipline them when they acted up.
"Hey" He smiled and nodded a greeting to Kaira and Amelia as he sat next to his twin. Kestrel immediately abandoned his shoulder, settling to flop on his knee and put her head on Amelia's leg, looking up at the woman with an expression which was just about begging for pats. Hawk was more reserved, simply giving the two humans a quiet chirp of greeting before returning to looking at the others who were entering the room.
"So, what do you think we're doing today?" He asked, eyeing the cloth which had been set out.
--------- .: Serenity :.
Serenity had heard that two of the other candidates had found eggs belonging to an unknown creature. Given her own experience, she had been very curious about them and if they had seen anything about the adults. Serenity was taking special care of the trio of eggs which she had found, though she had no intentions of keeping all three to herself. Instead she planned to give two of them to Theo and Ally when they got to hatching. She still had no idea what kind of eggs they were, though she had kept the things she had found with them.
In fact, that was where Lily was at the moment. The amethyst firelizard had taken an interest in the eggs and despite that she was barely hatched herself, had taken to hovering over them like an anxious mother. Thorn however was with his human, the diamond flit watching everyone with an odd mix of curiosity and disdain. Serenity settled herself in a chair, looking curiously at the cloth which had been set out and wondering what was going to be done with it.

Eternity took her time, she was just in her room after all. She finished oiling Siren's hide, and then made sure that Lucy had enough water in her bowl before heading to the common area. She ended up having to stand, as she was one of the last to show up. _____________ Most of them had gathered. "Alright you lot! Today you're going to be making the robes that you're to wear on Hatching day," she told them. She reached into the pile of fabric and grabbed two similarly sized long rectangle pieces. "You just make sure that it fits you. If it's too big around your waist, girls specifically, you can get a spare bit of fabric at the end and use it as a belt. There are two options for this, and it all depends on what you like. You can have sleeves, or no sleeves." She pointed to a girl at the back, who stood and slipped on her own Candidate robe that she'd made just a Turn previously. "Those of you who know your old robes still fit, bring them to me for inspection. If I say they're still good enough, you will be free to go." She glanced at Navelon as she said this, remembering the sketchy excuse for a robe that he'd had the one time.
"This is basically what it should look like," Lenara continued as the Candidate moved so everyone could see her. "Knee-length, at least, but not so long that it drags and restricts movement. Best to stick with knee length. If you choose sleeves, they either go to your elbows or wrists. Without sleeves is a simple design, you just don't add sleeves." The girl tied a strip of cloth around her waist as a belt. "Also, while you are not supposed to wear any outer clothes under the robe, I highly recommend wearing at least your smallclothes underneath. Many a Candidate was terribly embarrassed when they fell over at Hatching." She kept a straight face as she said this. It hadn't happened to her, but she'd seen it happen to Candidate and Weyrling alike. "Alright then. Get to work!"

Amelia/Theo
Kaira smiled to Theo and inclined her head, but before she could speak, Lenara did, explaining what they were to do. Rolling her eyes, she shrugged and leaned back in her seat, considering the pieces of cloth, as well as the 'model' carefully. Her six foot frame would require longer pieces, she thought idly, and rose to her feet. "Well come on then, you two. You heard the lady," she said lightly to them, winking and moving to obtain two pieces she thought might work on her body. She would require a belt, for she was slender in the waist area, but that could easily be done. Moving back to allow others to get their materials, she eyed the two pieces carefully. "Glad I learned how to sew by hand," she murmured to Isis, who chirped in agreement and sniffed the cloth curiously.
-------------------------------- Tobias
Aura grinned for his answer. "I did warn you," she said lightly, when he mentioned cutting his hand because he'd been woolgathering. "And I have no idea. They're still kind of soft, so probably not for awhile yet." Before she could continue, Lenara spoke, and she raised her head to better hear her over the others. Once she'd finished explaining, Aura sighed softly and shook her head. "Women's work," she muttered, then shrugged. Women's work it might be, but it was something she COULD do. "Never thought my upbringing would be useful," she grumbled. She'd had to repair clothing when her family's menfolk had gotten careless, and they were too stingy to buy a machine, so it had all been done by hand. And now it would come in handY, she thought with amusement. "Come on. Let's go get our's before all the good pieces are gone," she said, tugging him after her and carefully selecting pieces. She then grabbed some and held them up to him, muttering to herself in a foreign tongue.

Jena
Jena cuddled the Pearl flit as she relaxed in the main area of the barracks. When the Weyrlingmistress arrived, she jumped up and awaited further instruction, listening avidly as their task was explained. Oooh. Something she loved to do AND was good at. She let Opal rest in the sling she had made, and moved forward to examine the cloth.
"Hmm.. a little rough, and such a boring color," she muttered to herself. " So plain. And we can't even add any color? But it would look just darling with some rhinestones, or a sash in another color. Ugh.. so plain and simple. Can't I at least use colored THREAD?" She kept quietly making comments as she picked out two pieces of cloth for her robe, some for her sleeves, and a final larger piece to make a few...accents out of.
She took her things to a corner and quickly got to work, easily eyeballing the pattern for a robe shape, three quarter length sleeves, and because she wanted SOME sort of fanciness, she fashions a draping star shaped collar. She also makes a simple belt as she wants the decoration..
Tre
Tre had no idea where to even start. He had never had to patch his own clothes, as his mother and then his sister did it for him. He moved to grab some cloth, and sat down, struggling with even the basic pattern. He cursed under his breath as he pricked his finger. Then a little louder as he pricked his finger again. This was a girl's job. Guys were not meant to do sewing.
He kept on trying though, as he felt he had to prove himself up to the task.

Anka
Anka heard the call to report to the barracks and she slipped from the dining area table and made her way back to the barracks. She had just left the Candidate Barracks, allowing Kia and Imp to roam free while she had her meal. Gaol and Caoir were sitting on her shoulders, but neither were really making any move to talk today. It seemed both her lizard type pets were a little tired, or both were just enjoying being carted around like royalty while Elko, Kia, and Imp had to walk on their own.
When she reached the barracks, she saw the Candidate's gathering and waved to a few she knew by name but chose to stay away from the group she normally spoke to. Hoping to make a new friend, she stood toward the back, not far from an Earth-born male that looked like he was about to take a nap. She snarled her nose at the thought, but figured it was just bad taste for the Earth-born to show so little concern for the lesson.
~~~
Duncan
It was getting easier to sleep on the cot with all the male Candidates around him all the time. Of course, it wasn't much difference to him, but he was getting back into the swing of things. Hai woke him up, chittering on about something when he heard the voice in his head. He didn't know what time it was, nor when he had laid down. All he remembered was that he had been working with a Smith on trying to put some of the parts together when he had been sent back to the Barracks. Hai must have guided him home because he was still dressed in working clothes.
Shaking his head, Duncan got to his feet, swaying a little but moving none the less. "I'm up . . . I'm up," he grumbled, Adhainn just giving him that look that told him he was only standing by the grace of . . . what was that favorite curse he had been hearing around the Weyr? . . . Far . . . Farana? Farather? Shaking his head, he stopped trying to revert to Pernese curses and simply let a Scottish one rip. "Gawn giese fuckin peace" he snapped at the air, though it was probably directed at the aquamarine firelizard that was staring at him with those accusing swirling orbs and the Aquamarine dragon that was summoning him to the common room.
Dressing quickly and trying to escape Hai's accusing eyes, he quickly made his way into the common room and joined the rest of the Candidates, trying to sit toward the back and possibly get some more sleep before the lesson really got under way.
Jenesys looked up as Lenara spoke about what they were going to be doing...robes. They were going to make robes for the hatching? Well this was going to be interesting. He had a slight knack for sewing, more like stitching clothing if he needed, but a sewing robes was a bit different. He watched her and after a bit decided it was very similar to what his mother had taught him just a little more involved. He blinked in confusion for a moment when she mentioned smallclothes but figure it was the same as underwear after she gave an example as to why to wear them underneath. When Lenara instructed them to get to it he rose and moved to the pile of fabric with the others to find cloth that would fit him. Once he had his cloth, some thread, and a needle he went about piecing his soon to be robes together. Hearing the curse he looked over to where Tre was sitting.
"Need any help?" he offered as he thread his needle and to begin sewing his robes together, his slender fingers moving with more ease since his mother had taught him to sew. You'll never know when such a skill will come in handy. You'll thank me one day. Indeed he gave a silent prayer as thanks for what she had done for him...his mother was always right.
TOBIAS Tag Aura
When Aura grinned at him and did her little version of 'I told you so', he couldn't help the quick smirk that came to his lips. She was funny. Her thoughts on the eggs not hatching for a while yet put his mind at ease a little. He did not want it to hatch during the lesson. And who would know better about baby things then a girl. So, he decided to trust her judgment and put his attention more firmly upon the lesson. Just as he had suspected, they were going to be sewing together their candidate robes. There was only one little problem. He had never even picked up a needle let alone using one. He had no clue what to do.
Hearing Aura's grumbling about the task made him look at her with a raised eyebrow. Maybe if he asked nicely she would help him to --
Before he could even finish this though he found himself being tugged after her as she moved closer to the pile of white pieces of cloth. Watching her grab some, his face got slightly irritated when she held some up to him. He wasn't even going to look around to see how many of the others were laughing at him at this moment. He just stared at Aura and wondered what in the world she was doing. Then his irritation soothed a bit as she began to speak in a language he did not recognize.
"What are you doing?" He grumbled out. He did not know that she was sizing up the pieces to his height.
Tobias
Aura glanced up at him and grinned impishly. "Oh come now. We can't have your underthings showing due to a too short robe, now can we?" she chirped teasingly, continuing to hunt for pieces of the right size until she was satisfied. She then nodded to herself, told him 'Hold these please" and selected needles and thread. Her pure sticklerness as she examined each needle showed she knew exactly what she was doing, as well as what she would require, and she hummed softly to herself as she motioned Tobias to follow her back to where they'd begun. Without any word of protest, she then plopped down on the stone floor, took her pieces, and threaded her needle, then looked up at him and smiled.
"I'm going to GUESS-not assume, mind you, but GUESS- that you, my friend, do not know what to do?" she asked mildly, even as she began working, starting at the corners of the collar. She didn't even seem to be watching herself work, instead keeping her eyes on him as she awaited an answer, slender fingers deftly sliding the needle in and out of the white fabric.
