Eternity found herself laying on her back in the meadow, where she'd finally gone exploring. She sat up and saw what looked like a Hold family... A man and a woman, a couple kids, and a few older people. The young girl suddenly found tears running down her face again. That reminded her way too much of her own family. Of her own parents. She turned away, wishing once more that she didn't feel so... Alone.
It was a family gathering. And a large one at that. A number of older men and women, a large quantity of children of all ages, and the parents in the middle. One of the kids ran off, and saw the girl sitting in a flower patch by herself. He went over to her, a seven year old boy with two older brothers and a little sister, and he went over to talk to the stranger. He stood behind Eternity for a minute, then spoke.
"Why are you here by yourself?" He stepped around so he could see her face. "Why are you crying?"
She tried to wipe her face, but he had seen her. "Well, did you know that something bad happened a while ago?" she asked.
He nodded. "Ahuh. My mommy told me that something crashed out of the sky and a lot of people were hurt." He blinked. "Did you come out of the falling thing?"
"Yeah," Eternity said quietly. "But we weren't supposed to be here. Something went wrong, and we crashed." She sighed.
"Are you crying because you can't go back home?" he asked suddenly. Eternity laughed softly, then nodded.
"I can't get home to my mommy and daddy anymore..." she told the boy, fighting back fresh tears. "And I have two big sisters that are at home too. I can't see them again..." She ran her hand across her face again, only to be surprised by the feel of the small boy's hand on her shoulder.
"If you can't see your mommy and daddy, you can meet mine!" he said happily. "My mommy and daddy can be yours too!" Eternity felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude to this child. He didn't know her pain, but he still offered her a piece of his home. She nodded, tears once more running down her face, and hugged the boy. He hugged her back, and took her hand when she stood up. He led her to the family gathering, but Eternity stopped at the fringe. The boy ran ahead, to his mother, and Eternity gasped softly. This woman looked so much like her mother... And she found a song floating at the back of her mind again. It strangely applied now too.
"My son tells me that you've had quite the adventure," the woman said with a smile. Eternity nodded, wiping the tears from her cheeks.
"My name is Eternity, and I do apologize for interrupting your gathering," she said quickly. The woman laughed.
"You remind me of my sister. I think we can find a place for you here. I'm Maretta, the boy who brought you here is my son Tarepa." A man walked over. "Ah, perfect timing. This is Repanka, the father of my children. Repanka, this is Eternity, one of the crash survivors."
"Pleasure to meet you sir," she said to him. She turned to Maretta again. "Do you really think I could... Be part of all this...?" she asked hesitantly.
"Of course ya can girlie," said the man with a smile. Eternity reached out and embraced the woman, who returned the gesture after a moment of surprise. Eternity let out the song that had been dancing at the back of her mind.
My mommy comes back.
She always comes back.
She always comes back to get me.
My mommy comes back.
She always comes back.
She never would forget me.
"Hey, that's a nice song," Maretta said after a moment. "Do I remind you of someone?"
"You... You're a lot like my mother," Eternity admitted. "You look like her, you even seem to be just as nice as her too. I'd be honored to be part of this family." The tears that streamed down her face now were tears of joy. She finally had a place to belong.
