Mid-Day- 3 Months After The Crash
Silence reigned in the Hatching Grounds, the air heavy and still. Currently, the eggs' mother was absent, the father of the clutch watching over it on the Sands, keeping the eggs in sight. He wasn't laying curled around them as his mate was, but he had specific instructions to keep an eye on their smallest, hyper child, and was faithfully following these. The amusement to this was that he was essentially chasing the egg around the Sands, as it refused to remain in one place, much to his rider's enjoyment. Said enjoyment was being voiced loudly, J'mael's laughter rich and heady, and Lin came in and quirked a brow at him, only to chuckle herself as she watched Hyzeth try to corral his hyper eggling. "Give it up, Master Diamond," she called lightly. "That one will not be contained."
The Diamond's response was to actually sigh and settle to the sand, just watching the egg as it rolled about. It seemed to have infected all but its largest and most serious minded siblings-ie the three largest eggs-with its hyperactivity, and all of them were wiggling and shivering somewhat, though nothing more NOTICEABLE was happening. A few moments later Aketh soared in, and as if her presence was a trigger, all of the sudden, there was no shell between the hyper Hatchling and her world. The abruptness of this had Hyzeth staring down at his small daughter, who looked up at him and blinked innocently, then the little Emerald looked up at her mother as the Pearl settled at her side, crooning a welcome to her. "Well hello there, little one," Lin said, blinking, then she shook off the surprise as Hyzeth bellowed for the Candidates, causing the Emerald to squeak and hide under her mother in fear of the loud noise. Aketh snapped at her mate, banishing him from the sand, and he creeled an apology to their daughter and vacated them in favor of the ledge just above them.
----------------------------
Kaira was in the middle of her chores when the bellow resounded, followed very closely by the resounding thrum that signified this all important event. Looking to the other Healers, she was swatted by one of them and told to 'hurry up and git gal! Ye ain't got all day!" She ran for the Temporary Candidate Barracks and once inside quickly exchanged clothing for robes and ran for the Sands, uncaring if she was out of breath and a little bedraggled when she got there. They were Hatching!
-----------------------------
Aura was sitting obediently as her stitches were removed, waiting and trying her darndest not to wiggle and mess Joana up. The Healer had been extraordinarily patient with her, and even now was smiling as she snipped and tugged gently at the blacks threads binding Aura's wounds. The abrupt bellow had Aura hissing and Joana did as well as she pulled too hard at a stitch and caused the area to begin bleeding. "Dangit Hyzeth!" the Healer snapped, then stopped and listened as the humming started. "Okay, I forgive him," she added a moment later, even as she pressed gently to the blood on Aura's back, soaking it up and causing the bleeding to quickly stop. "Okay. We'll finish this later, since I'll never get you still," she said teasingly, and Aura looked at her hopefully. "Come on, let's go." The girl scrambled back into her shirt, and Joana chuckled softly, then motioned her out ahead of her and followed her patiently as they made their way to the Sands.

Anka
The sudden call of the Pearl could only mean one thing. The eggs were hatching, something Anka had been waiting for since she was brought to the Weyr. The time had finaly come! Of course, the eggs picked when they wanted to show up, not going with everyone else's schedule. So when the call came at mid day, Anka wasn't quite busy with the runners, but after hearing the call, she was glad she had waited to work out Elika.
Dressing was a little difficult, as not being in complete controll of her body had her a little wobbly on her feet. Kia, Imp, Caoir, and Gaol all tried to rise and follow her out of the barracks but she made them stay in the barracks, knowing that they would not be welcomed on the Sands by the clutchmother.
Racing out with the rest of the Canidadtes, she felt light as a wherry, ready to take flight and never land again. Of course, in all honestly, her life could change tonight and it would never be the same, or there was a chance that by the end of this, nothing changed.
Either way, the moment she reached the archway to the Sands, and saw the lillte Emerald sitting there before her mother, Anka actually felt tears begin to roll down her face, to the point where she had to take a moment to collect herself.

Duncan
It was one thing to be waken up by a simple voice, but to have a sudden bugle jerk you awake, Duncan was up in a moment and that's when the panic started. Of course, why the Candidate ess mapping at mid day was a little questionable, but he had a good reason. He had been up before dawn helping with the washing and had literally just sat down to rest his eyes. Adhainn was creeing about the barracks, as if she couldn't figure it out, nor have any idea why everyone was moving at once. He followed the other male's as they quickly drsssed in their Candidate Whites, then as a disconjoined, hurried out of the barracks and toward their future.

.: Theodore :.
Like many of the candidates, Theo had been in the middle of doing his assigned chores when the bellowing of dragons alerted the world that something was happening on the hatching sands. Theo found himself waved away fro supplies he had been helping sort. "Gwon n get boy" the wizened old woman who had been working next to him gave him a push towards the door "Thems eggs be a hatchin an youse gotta go n be there fo them littlies"
Getting into the candidate barracks wasn't difficult, though with every candidate trying to get in and get their things and get out again, there was quite a crush of people starting to take place. Theo managed to get into his room, quickly stripping off his shirt and pulling on the candidate robe. He took a moment to pull at the seams, getting the garment as straight as he could. He had tried his best, but sewing has proven to be a lot more difficult than it had looked.
Entering the sands, Theo bowed to the queen and took his place on the sands. Counting the eggs, one seemed to be missing. Theo hoped that the hatchling was simply hiding amongst the other eggs and not gone.
---------- .: Serenity :.
Serenity had been studying with one of the harpers when a loud bellow disturbed her, causing her to jerk and spill some ink from the inkwell she was refilling. A loud thrumming sound filled the air soon afterwards and Serenity found herself humming along. One of the journeymen shook her shoulder and then gave her a gentle shove. "It's hatching time miss" he said "you had best to get changed and then go to the sands" with a silent nod, serenity handed over her work and headed for the barracks.
Sadly, there was not much she could do about the ink which stained her hands and flecked her forearms, but her robe was neat and clean and she took a moment to re-do her hair in a simple braid so that she didn't have escaped hairs sticking out all over the place. She also had to take a moment to reinforce to Lily and Thorn that they were not under any circumstances to follow her onto the sands.
Like the others, Serenity bowed to Aketh as she entered the sands and took her place. The young woman's eyes were fixed on the clutch, her breath feeling caught in her chest in anticipation of the hatching of the eggs.

Though Gavin had been waiting with bated breath for the Hatching, Hyzeth's bellow startled him and he jumped a mile, dropping what he was doing. Once he realized what was going on, Gavin raced off to go get his robe and sandals. It was finally time. Gavin quickly changed into the robe and sandals. It would be awful to be any later than he already was. He couldn't really run in sandals, even to the Hatching Sands; he'd probably trip and hurt himself. Gavin walked as fast as he could though. Even if he hadn't been to the Touching, which he had, and didn't know where the Hatching Sands were, which he did, Gavin would have been able to find them simply by the stream of candidates hurrying out of the Barracks and towards the Sands.
As he entered the Sands, Gavin bowed deeply to Aketh before he approached the eggs, stopping at what he hoped was a reasonable distance from the eggs. It wasn't like he'd be able to Stand and draw at the same time, so he wanted the best possible view. Hopefully, with a good enough view, he'd be able to remember the hatching to draw later. Gavin looked over the Sands, counting the eggs several times, but always coming up one short. He hadn't heard any keening and unless the dragons on this Pern were different enough not to keen for a dragon's death, the hatchling had to be somewhere. It might just be hiding though; Faranth knew that the bellow that had startled him and probably many other candidates at chores could easily have scared a hatchling.

Jenesys jerked at the call that rang through the Weyr and his mind, he was never going to get used to the dragons speaking into his head. He'd gotten up earlier in the morning and took care of any chores he had to before putting his mind to something other then trying to rebuild the shuttle. He'd gotten back into writing and had found that bouncing ideas off of Lazuli and Spring was very helpful as they always responded to him in some way. The call however got his attention faster then any teacher demanding a paper or bully wishing him harm.
"It looks like it's time to see if one of the hatchlings is...meant for me," he whispered to the two creatures curled in his lap. Lazuli looked up and chirped, it almost sounded reassuring as Spring only crooned and crawled up to his shoulder so he could dress.
Lazuli followed his sister as Jenesys gathered his papers and hurried to the barracks to change. It didn't take him long to strip down to his briefs before pulling on the robe he'd made a few weeks ago. It was a little snug around his waist, but that only meant he didn't need a belt to make sure it didn't trip him. After tying on his sandals, Spring and Lazuli had taken positions on his shoudlers as he left the Barracks for the Sands. The closer he got to the Sands...the more nervous he was becoming. He was always confident during exams, tests, presentations...but this...this was a true life change and if he screwed it up.
"Ow!" he gasped, at the Hatching Groudns entrance and glared at Spring. The Teal chittered softly, sending feelings of reassurance to him that made the young man smile. "Ok...I'll stop," he whispered, nuzzling both Lazuli and Spring before actually stepping onto the Sands. Walking towards the mother and her eggs he noticed one of the eggs had already hatched...and she was gorgeous. Looking up at the regal Pearl he offered her a respectful bow before joining the other Candidates.
"I am so nervous right now..." he murmured as he stopped at Duncan's side.

Eternity was working outside with Lucy, Siren for once nowhere to be seen. Lucy already knew how to sit, and so Eternity was working on teaching her to lie down on command. She didn't believe the puppy would be violent, but she had to work on everything just in case. She hadn't bothered teaching Lucy any sort of "go home" command, she wouldn't always be living in the Candidates barracks after all.
The bellow was loud, and startled everyone in the vicinity, but Eternity was off running toward the barracks, with Lucy at her heels, to the amusement of a few of the non-Candidates that had been invited to the makeshift Weyr.
She pulled on her robe, after tossing off her tunic and skirt, and tied it off with the belt she'd decided on just days ago. She was only fifteen, but an actress's habits were hard to grow out of, especially in such a short amount of time.
"Alright everyone, hurry it up!" Lenara called from her place in the common room of the barracks. "You should all be there by the time the first Hatchling emerges from the egg!"
Just before leaving the room, she pointed to the little mat that was Lucy's. "Settle," she said simply, watching as Lucy went and laid down on the mat. "Stay. Siren, you stay here too. I don't want you disrupting the Hatching." Siren chirped and went to settle on the windowsill. Eternity smiled at the pair before slipping on the sandals and running toward the Sands.
She paused outside the Hatching Sands to catch her breath, but then she walked right in, under the watchful eye of the Aquamarine that was the Weyrlingmistres's dragon. She bowed respectfully to the Pearl Queen, then counted the eggs, noticing already that there were some shell fragments on the Sands, and spotted the first of the Hatchlings.
"Gavin, look, she's over there with Aketh," she told him, pointing. "I think Hyzeth scared her when he called for us." __________
After the barracks had been deserted, Lenara made her way over to the Hatching Sands, stopping outside to oversee the post-Hatching setup; oil for the dragon's hide, plenty of meat for each dragon, all set up in fifteen small stations. Then she stepped just inside the Candidates entrance, watching from there. She couldn't see the Emerald, but she could tell that something had happened.

It was quiet for the moment, even as the Candidates and guests came running in, and Aketh stood watchfully, her Emerald offspring watching the strange two legged things curiously, her eyes whirling with that same emotion. The fear triggered by her father's bellow was gone, and she bounced forwards now, chirping happily and winding her way through her fellow eggs. Behind her, Aketh settled back and folded half-unfurled wings into her sides, just watching now, her head shifting as another of her eggs split cleanly, revealing a handsome little Sapphire, who eyed his prancing sister and rumbled-as much as such a small being could-in amusement before turning his attention to the humans as well.
---------------------
Kaira was silent as she watched, having slid inside only slightly ahead of some of the others, and was leaning back against the wall. Her eyes slid over the eggs and the two hatchlings, and her lips twitched as she watched the happy little Emerald dancing about, sniffing curiously at the Candidates. She seemed to shy away from a couple of them, but not out of fear or nervousness, just due to the fact they weren't interesting to her, and she continued on, causing Kaira's lips to twitch once again. She was such a cute little thing.
---------------------
Aura was watching the Sands from the area off to the side, separated from them by a low rock wall with a single opening. Joana stood nearby, just watching to be sure she didn't harm herself, but also watching as well. Within Aura's mind, jealousy flared, watching those in white who stood on those Sands, and she shook her head. "I cannot wait until I get that chance," she muttered softly, and Orti cheeped from her shoulder, nuzzling her cheek reassuringly. Joana placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"You'll get your chance," she said soothingly. "I know it's hard. I've been there before." Aura looked at her in surprise, and she gave her a sad smile. "I never got my chance though. Even though the dragons INSISTED I was worthy, my parents wouldn't let me go."

Even as he watched the eggs, Gavin noticed Eternity reaching the Sands out of the cornet of his eye. It didn't take long for her to call to him and point to something on the Sands. Gavin looked where she was pointing and spotted the missing egg, or rather its inhabitant. The missing egg had hatched into an Emerald who quickly clambered out from under her mother and wandered through the rest of the clutch in a manner that could only be described as bouncy. She didn't seem to have a particular direction in mind yet.
"There she is, she must have at least been startled when Hyzeth bellowed. I know I was and she must have been barely hatched. What a welcome to the world. I'd be scared too in her place." While Gavin was talking to Eternity, a Sapphire had hatched who seemed almost amused by his sister's antics. He headed toward the candidates too, but like his sister, he didn't seem to have a destination yet. The Sapphire seemed more deliberate about his progress though, not something Gavin had expected from a Sapphire. Was the Emerald his, or the Sapphire? Had his dragon not hatched yet and it was still in the unhatched eggs? Would he Impress at all? He hoped so, even if it wasn't at this clutch.
Privately, he wondered if the hatchlings had been waiting for the off-worlders to arrive. It was a silly idea, but the way the eggs had started to be more active made it stick in his mind.

"I was working with Lucy when I heard it," she admitted softly. She spotted the Sapphire, remembering that this one was normally male, and laughed softly. "I guess we should focus on the eggs instead of each other, huh?" she asked with a laugh, taking a few paces away from the boy so they wouldn't get yelled at. She was amazed at the accuracy of the scrolls; the Sapphire really was beautiful... And the Emerald one wasn't a pure green color, but rather swirls and splotches of different shades of green. She simply watched, wondering which of these little Hatchlings was the one that had touched her mind when they'd all Touched the eggs. Maybe that one would be hers. But she found her eyes drawn to the two Queen eggs. She was curious as to what would Hatch out of each egg. Something in her mind kept insisting that one Queen would be a Pearl, and the other a Diamond. But... Why did she think that? Diamond Queens were really rare. And what was the likelihood of two Queens in one Clutch to begin with, let alone one so small.
We'll just have to wait and see, I guess...

Duncan felt a flutter of panic race through him as he joined the line of growing Candidates. He bowed to the Queen and her mate, before looking up and finding that the little Emerald was now joined by a Sapphire, both weren't moving quickly toward the line of Candidates. It was cute watching the little Emerald dance about, while her brother seemed to be rumbling in amusement before looking out at the gathering line of Candidates. When he heard Jenesys speak beside him, he glanced over at the young man before back at the dragonets. "You know . . . I dought I might feel a bit more confident when all dis went down . . Nae. Nae, dat nae be bein' de case," he stated, seriously thinking his knees might shake him off the Sands. But his feet did him proud and he stayed put, though he was sure Jenesys would be hearing his bones rattling around in his body.

Jenesys couldn't help but sidle up beside Duncan. He'd never been around a...'activity' like this. To be presented to a number of eggs where one of the creatures inside may touch your mind and you...they...both of you, become one. The first hatchling, Emerald did bring a smile to his face though, her youth and innocence was refreshing. His smile soon diminished though...was he even meant for one of these creatures. He knew better then to believe if they were worthy of him, after all, they were choosing him. He knew he was damaged goods, he couldn't socialize...he wasn't a people person. His nose was almost always in a book in a corner of the Records Room or the Weyr away from people. Swallowing he glanced up at Duncan before his eyes turned back to the dragons and the eggs.
"I don't think anyone could feel confident being laid bare before creatures like these...once their in your mind they know everything about you...how," he whispered before swallowing, "how do you even know if...if your worthy?"

.: Theodore :.
Theo watched, his expression curious, as a little emerald figure peaked out from behind Aketh. There was much chatter around him from the other candidates, but the usually gregarious man didn't join in. His focus was on the eggs and the babies. A smile curved his lips as she watched the emerald, seeming to be over what ever had caused her to be hiding, came bouncing out into the wider world. She was a cute little thing, clearly enjoying herself as she sniffed about the candidates. He looked at the others, wondering which of them would be the one considered worthy of her.
The hatching of the sapphire was almost missed in Theo's amused following of the emerald, but the little almost-rumble caught his attention. It seemed that they had another cheerful happy hatchling on their hands, and Theo's smile grew wider as he watched them. This was proving to be remarkably fun to be a part of, nothing like the serious and stressful expereince he had been half-expecting it would be. ----- .: Serenity :.
Sen watched the others as much as she did the eggs as they all gathered and found their places. It was interesting to see the differences between her fellow earthers verses the recently searched pern-born versus those pernborn who had stood before. People had always fascinated Serenity and she filled away all of her observations for later perusal. Of course, they were all here for the hatchlings and most of Serenity's mind was on them, watching the eggs and wondering what would happen.
A little emerald made an appearance, sneaking out from behind her mother. Serenity thought that she must be the one from that egg which had been hatched before they all got to the sands. Whatever might have been wrong before, the emerald seemed to have completely gotten over it now, if the way she was bouncing about was any indication. Not long after the emerald began sniffing about the candidates, a sapphire hatched, a happy fellow who seemed just as cheerful as his sister. Sen thought this was a good thing, that the hatchlings all seemed so happy.

Now, where are you hiding? Here? No... Here? No... The voice echoed cheerfully into the minds of those present, its owner obviously the forest-hued, lime-green swirled, Emerald, as the voice was very female, and she danced through the Candidates, careful not to hurt any of them. Sniffing intently at a couple, she sneezed and blew a puff of sand into the air, then snorted and pawed at it playfully. Jena-Mine, where are you? The tone this time was a light, sing-song tone, as she continued searching among the girls, ignoring the boys now she knew what the mind she sought felt like.
Her brother was more sedate, but still plenty playful as he strode towards the boys, his tail tips twitching behind him. He was a pretty thing, a deep, rich sapphire blue in tone, but in striking contrast, his entire tail was almost white, with only the faintest shadings of blue to it. He examined each boy carefully, then turned his head as one of the median sized eggs broke, dumping a startled Topaz onto the sand in an ungraceful sprawl. The bulky male squawked his displeasure as he rose and proceeded to tear into his eggshell, destroying it in a fit of temper that had Aketh rumbling soothingly. Once he was done, he turned to face the Candidates, eyeing them all intently, then plopping down on his amber-colored rump and proceeding to just watch, seeming to be examining each and every one, no discrimination made for gender.

Tobias had his arms elbow-deep in pots he had been cleaning. He was helping out in the kitchens again. He didn't mind it. The bustle and chatter of the kitchen staff was nice to listen to. But something else came to his ears and it was a sound he thought he might have been anticipating. Looking to the cook, she confirmed it with a smile and shooed him out. Hurrying back to his room, he stripped of all but his underthings and put on the sleeveless robe that he had made for himself. It wasn't the best robe out there but he had worked on it a little more after that lesson and made sure the stitching was reinforced for strength. He didn't want anything coming loose on the sands. He'd rather not deal with that kind of publicity. His specialty was flying under the radar as it was.
Slipping his feet into the sandals that had been placed in his room after the lesson, he made his way at a fast walk towards the sands. He did not want to run and risk slamming into anyone. So he was not the first to arrive. Having paid attention to the stories and advice he had heard at the candidate lessons and from the kitchen staff, he set his feet upon the sands and then gave the clutch mother and her rider a respectful bow and a very quiet thanks for the honor. Only then did he enter the sands.
As he walked to his place, he felt the heat radiating up from the sand under foot and he shook some that had tried to collect in his sandals. A quick glance to the stands then revealed Aura. A slight bow of his head to her and a little smile of recognition was given as he took his place. The three hatchlings already upon the sands and the remaining eggs were then given his entire attention. They were big for babies but so incredibly amazing. He'd been awed by the adults but these little ones filled his heart with excitement, nervousness and hope. His outward expressions were still pretty stoic and calm but inside he was very much enjoying and appreciating what he was now witnessing with his own eyes.
The stories he had heard could never have done this justice. It was amazing!
