Eternity sat on her knees in front of one of the crosses, swapping out old flowers for new ones. She didn't have Lucy with her today, she'd asked her roommate to watch the puppy. She needed some time alone, and she just couldn't do that when she was with the puppy.
Even with the puppy, her heart was still numb. She just put a smile on her face to keep the others from worrying about her. She closed her eyes and stopped fighting the tears. Yes, Lucy gave her a distraction, but it just wasn't enough to help her recover. Not yet.
Why hadn't I been with her that day? she wondered silently. If... If we'd been together... If I'd known where she was... Her shoulders shook slightly, and she put her hands over her face. The one constant figure in her life... Mother had always been called into the hospital even on her days off, and Father was never really there to begin with. Sure, every once in a while he'd come home, but working at NASA took a lot of his time. Serenity had been the only real constant in her life. Her big sister had been there more than anyone.
She could almost hear her father's voice when he called her mother, and then her sisters, telling them that the Aries was gone. That his baby girl wasn't going to come home. That... That they were a four person family again. They wouldn't have a viewing, the two girls wouldn't have bodies to look at. If only dad hadn't signed us up for this stupid camp! She cried, filled with a sudden, unreasonable anger at her father for forcing the two girls to go to the space camp. She should've just said no! If she'd refused, then they'd be at home right now, they'd be safe, and they'd be getting ready for school to start. Serenity was supposed to start her senior year, and Eternity was getting ready to start her sophomore year. It just wasn't fair!
She put her hands on her knees, bunched into fists, and she just couldn't stop crying. She didn't care about dehydrating... At least it would be easier to deal with if she was with her sister. No... No, she couldn't think like that.
"You're such a fool Eternity..." she muttered.
