7 Hues(Known)
(Breaks denote ranks)
Pearl- Pearls are elegant, graceful creatures who can come in an iridescent variety of hues, including white, pale pink, black, pale browns and rarely pale blues or off whites. The largest dragons of all, they range in size from 48-53 feet. They are the Queens of their species, obeyed by all other dragons, even the Diamond Queens, and they are fair and well equipped for leadership. They CAN come across as slightly vain and a bit full of themselves, but they do not allow this to interfere with their duties. They are highly protective of their clutches, and it is impossible to separate a Pearl from her clutch until it has Hatched and her offspring have moved on.
Onyx- Onyx Kings are darkness personified. If shadows could take form, that would be an Onyx. Dark of hide, with rich blacks and VERY dark grays, and possessed of a gemlike gleam, these handsome males are hard to beat for looks, and are the largest males, coming in at between 45 and 50 feet. Personality wise is something else entirely. Where the Pearls are commanding and somewhat vain, the Onyxes are aloof, almost cold, with a hard edge to their way of thinking. They are, however, exceedingly loyal to their weyrmates, and are always the last to leave the Fall Sites, after making sure ALL of their dragons in their Wings are accounted for.
----------------------------------
Topaz- Muscular, midranked males, Topazes come in all shades that the gem NATURALLY does, from pale oranges and golds to soft blues. This can cause some confusion if one does not account for their size-43 to 48 feet- and build, and it is not unusual for the smaller blue-toned Topazes to be mistaken for Sapphires at Hatching. Topazes have an odd sort of logic, and their way of communicating can come across almost as riddle-like unless one knows them. Some of the best riddlemasters are, in fact, elder Topazes who have had the time to come up with the most confounding logic. The more golden Topazes seem more inclined to this as well, while those of a more blue tone tend towards a more light-hearted and silly, albeit still logical, approach.
----------------------------------
Sapphire- Sapphires are the personification of the word BLUE, with every shade of the color imaginable present in their ranks, from pale off whites to rich navies and midnights. At between 35 and 40 feet, these strictly male dragons are loyal, goofy and the first to point fingers if they think it will cause amusement and chaos. Chaotic truly describes these dragons, for they love nothing more than to cause mischief, especially when young. They do mellow as they age, and tend to keep their worst-or best, according to the Sapphire in question- tricks for their rider. They are quick, agile, and enduring, given their size and sleek build.
Amethyst- Amethysts are somewhat shy, sleek females who come in all shades of purple, with a slight iridescence at times. In size, they can be anywhere from 30-35 feet long. Quirky by nature, there are really no two Amethysts who are exactly alike, and each seems to have her own defining feature, be it a marking on her hide, a physical trait she possesses, or some other ability. Strangely fashion-forward, it is not unusual for an Amethyst to ask the classic mother question of "Are you really going out dressed like THAT?" They are more likely to think outside the box than most other dragons, and are always quick to figure out a solution for an unexpected issue that has no classic resolution. The best Searchers, they are highly empathic, and sensitive to their surroundings, and many Amethysts in history can claim the honor of finding a future Queenrider.
Quartz- Quartzes are strange little dragons, who can range in size from almost as large as mid-sized Sapphire to as small as a small Emerald. The size shift seems to come with the gender, with male Quartzes seeming to be larger and more heavily muscled, while females are smaller, more delicately built. They're Quartzes, always in possession of a white base, generally with some sort of toning to it. Much like the Emeralds, finding a solid white Quartz is nigh impossible. When it comes to all over the place, Quartzes are it. They are not predictable at all, and trying to figure out what's going through one's mind is like trying to answer the question of existence. They are masters of deception, very talented at making someone THINK they're thinking one thing and actually thinking another thing entirely. Only their Riders know better, but they seem drawn to Candidates who enjoy chaos and deception, which can be a tricky thing.
Emerald- Emeralds are lovely, somewhat ditzy creatures, with hides that come in tones of green, sometimes spattered with gold or blue, and always multiple shades. To find a solidly hued Emerald is VERY hard. Size-wise, they are the smallest strictly female hue, ranging between 20-25 feet long. They know they're pretty, and they love to flirt and show off for the males. With a habit of Rising 2-3 times a Turn, this can get a little hectic, and not a week goes by without at least ONE Rising in an established Weyr. They are very attached to their Riders, and when young, this can cause some issues, as they show this attachment through jealousy, 'protecting' their Mine from others getting too close. This habit does fade, although they will still sometimes fall back on that jealousy when unsure or ill at ease.
2 Hues(Heard Of)
Diamond- Diamonds are exquisite creatures, be they the muscular and warm-hearted Queens or the sleek and calculating Kings. Born from perfectly normal eggs, they are massive, snow-white beasts, matching Onyxes for sheer size. Diamonds always come in singles, and if there were ever to be multiple born from a Clutch, it would be chaos. It's generally bad enough when a Diamond and an Onyx King are born of the same clutch, and there will ALWAYS be a struggle of some sort, unless their mother or another Queen immediately reigns them in and orders them to find their Riders, or they do not Hatch close to one another time-wise. Many is the King who has been lost because his own brother could not stand the sight of him. In complete contrast to this, Diamond Queens have been known to assist their Onyx and Pearl siblings if they were struggling, even standing between them and a threat from another sibling. Rare and lovely, Diamond females are born about a quarter as often as Diamond Kings, and there are few recorded Queens who can lay claim to having clutched multiple Diamonds. They only occur in one of about every thirty clutches or so.
----------------------------------
Aquamarine- Aquamarines are one of the rarest of the dragon colors. A mid-ranked color, they sit right about the size of a Topaz, but can be a little bit larger or smaller, only by a few feet. Always female, they prefer Impressing to their own gender, but have been known to cross-Impress from time to time. They never seem particularly picky about the personality of the person, but the person in question always seems to have something that they are working through. Be it struggling past a fear, or working through a traumatic event. Their hides are a blue-teal coloring, and some have been known to have swirls of darker or lighter color, but never too blue or too green. (Written by summerrain)
1 Hue(Myth)
Lapis- So rare they are only a myth, Lapis dragons are stunning creatures of rich dark blues, speckled liberally with golden tones. Generally female, they do come in both genders, but there has only ever been one male Lapis featured in the stories about them, as opposed to three females. The legends state them to be kind-hearted creatures who are always willing to help another in need, and while they APPEAR to rank between Quartz and Emerald in truth, the stories all claim them to be treated with such respect by the other dragons they would almost be thought to be mini Royals. Their riders were all older, women who had suffered such severe lives that they were considering ending it when their dragons came into their lives. Even the male one chose a female in the legends, and was written to be brave, and amazingly strong for his small size, only 20 feet long. The females were all said to be larger, between 23-28 feet in size.
