It was time.
A month ago, a promise had been made to give them more time, and now that month was over, with no signs of movement, of life, within 15 shells that should have cracked over three months before. Motioning to the males behind her, Gerith paced forwards, sliding into the cavern with a low rumble, to let the Pearl within know she was coming in. Aketh was laying on the sand, curled about her eggs, her eyes red, orange and yellow with concerned agitation. Against her pale blue side lay two massive eggs, both with a gleaming rainbow iridescence dancing across their shells, and Gerith felt a twinge of sad pride. She was proud of Aketh, who had clutched TWO Queens her first Clutch, and yet saddened by these two promises for the future that had never panned out. Off to the side, Hyra and Lin stood silently, watching the interaction and hoping nothing would go wrong.
It is time, Aketh. The month is ended, Gerith said gently, and Aketh's body tensed, tightening about her clutch and pulling the mottled shells in closer to her. Gerith gave an agitated noise, which was answered not by Aketh but by the pale form perched above her, his wings half spread in the same agitation.
We have told you time and again they live! Why will you not believe us! The young Diamond's voice was hard, edged with a coldness more often seen in Onyxes, and Gerith knew it was because he was afraid, afraid this clutch might be HIS only chance to pass on his genes. Why Aketh had chosen the selfish King was beyond Gerith, but he had done well by her, remaining loyal despite several other Queens Rising after she had, and of course, siring two Queens with her. Still though. She eyed the Diamond calmly until he hissed in irritation and pulled his wings in, his rider moving to stroke his neck, though that did not calm the red tone to his hard gaze.
Once Hyzeth backed down, Gerith again looked to the strangely silent Aketh, eyeing the blue Pearl curiously. The last few times she had come, Aketh had stood firmly between her and the clutch, vehemently protesting their removal from this place, but now, she was still, save for the tension causing her to tremble faintly. Her tail was twitching, but she spoke not a word of protest, causing Gerith to wonder if she was alright, or if something was wrong with her. She padded forwards a bit, then stopped, expecting her daughter to rise up and defend her eggs again. But still, Aketh did not move. It was then that Gerith noticed the young Pearl was keeping her tail tips visible, instead of curling them in under her hind legs, and she cocked her dark head, looking to the eggs themselves now. It was a lovely clutch really, and would have been...
Her train of thought cut off, and her head snaked forwards so fast that she startled Hyzeth into hissing again in protest. But Aketh seemed to have expected her motion and merely shifted her wing slightly as Gerith's head stopped over one of the medium sized eggs, cocked so she could see it clearly. As she watched, it twitched again, and the motion was echoed by another egg further off, smaller and closer to the outside of the ring Aketh had curled them into with her body. The black Pearl's head rose, and she spread her consciousness, even as she reached for the two Queens, seeking some reaction. She got more than she bargained for as the larger one banged against her nose, and Aketh rumbled faintly in amusement as she pulled it back some, then eyed the smaller one, which merely twitched an acknowledgement of the mental touch. Spreading it further, she felt them, small minds awakening, unfurling within those shells which only a month before had felt cold and distant. What had changed, what had caused these young ones to suddenly sprout within their shells?!
The arrival of the Aries was the only major event, but could it have been enough to trigger them? Either way, these eggs were OBVIOUSLY alive, as their parents had been claiming the whole time, and Gerith backed away, acknowledging that her daughter and her Diamond were indeed correct.
