"I never thanked you," Lenara said quietly, looking down at the Weyrwoman from her position on the blue dragoness's back. "For... For helping take care of me as a child. Even after your Impression, you looked after me until I became a Candidate. So... Thank you."
Helena shook her head. "Father was never worthy of the name, you know that as well as I," she said, brushing it off. "We are family. Family needs to take care of each other." Lenara nodded and smiled.
"I shall be sure to give the Sea Cliffs Weyrwoman your regards," Lenara told her sister. She put a hand on Iabureth's hide. "Let's get going," she told the Aquamarine. "Farewell, sister." Iabureth waited for the Weyrwoman to get to a safe distance before flaring her wings and taking to the sky. Once she was at a decent height, she vanished between, leaving Igen Weyr behind. _________________________________
There was a pop as a large blue dragoness appeared out of between above the makeshift buildings that had become Sea Cliffs Weyr. Her little Amethyst poked her head out of the pocket of her riding jacket, which was immediately removed due to the weather. Iabureth landed in the Bowl, and Lenara unstrapped and slipped to the ground. Rose chirped and flew out of the pocket and landed on the shoulder.
I was expecting more people to be here, Lenara admitted.
As was I, but surely they have more to do with the Clutch that was believed to be dead, Iabureth agreed. Do not forget, this Clutch was three months late to Hatch, and only recently began to move.
I know, I know, Lenara laughed softly. Well, I do need to find the Weyrwoman, or at least someone who knows what I'm supposed to be doing. She looked around, but didn't see anyone. Hm... Maybe I was off by a day or two?

A pale head rose as the new presence was felt, and eyes turned towards the exit, a low rumble sounding. In answer, an even paler form rose and took flight, soaring out of the upper entrance of what was to become the Hatching Grounds. Hyzeth circled several times, examining the pretty Aquamarine, then moved to backwing and settle near her, uncaring if his wingbeats got sand all over her rider, though His instantly berated him for the callousness of his actions. He snorted, then rumbled a greeting to the female as his rider, J'mael, leapt off his shoulders and padded over to her. "I apologize for Hyzeth," he said immediately, then offered his hand. "J'mael. Aketh told us you had arrived and wanted to know who you were and why you were here. She's quite edgy, so please forgive the abruptness of her questions." He gave a calm smile, his pale gaze looking the woman over intently.
A slender form approached a moment later, giving a fond smile to J'mael and a tolerant one to his Diamond, then her attention turned to the new rider. "I'm Lin, Pearl Aketh's rider, and temporary Weyrwoman here," she explained, her jet gaze examining the Aquamarinerider. "I know you," she said with a frown, trying to think.

Iabureth tapped Lenara with her muzzle, then pointed up toward the sky. A Diamond was descending, and the Aquamarine gave a respectful dip of her head to the white King. "Of course, though I was told that notice would be given of my arrival..." Lenara said, slightly confused. I guess I was off by a day or two, she conceded silently to the dragoness beside her. A soft rumble of laughter escaped Iabureth's throat at the young woman's question.
"Ah, Weyrwoman Lin, Weyrleader J'mael, I am Lenara of Aquamarine Iabureth," she said respectfully, making sure to keep her tone even. "I was told by Weyrwoman Helena that a Clutch of eggs was recently confirmed living, and that a Weyrlingmaster would be required upon their Hatching. I volunteered myself, under the assumption that word would be sent ahead of my departure." A small smile graced her lips. "I should not be surprised that you recognise me, Weyrwoman. I held the title of Weyrlingmistress of Igen, until just this morning. Oh, and my sister wishes me to give you her regards, and congratulations on the strong Clutch that Aketh has borne." The Amethyst flit chirped and flew over to the other humans.
"Ah, Rose, stop that," she scolded softly. The flit settled back onto the woman's shoulder. "I apologize for her behaviour, but some things are simply ingrained," she added, speaking to the Riders this time.

"It may have been," J'mael said lightly. "People tend to send messages to Gerith rather than Aketh, since she's the Senior Queen of Southern, where Aketh is also from. They don't realize that Aketh is technically in charge here, not Gerith." The explanation made sense, if one thought about it. Up until a month before, Aketh had been just a young Queen who'd run away with her mate and clutch and disappeared without a trace.
Lin smiled and nodded. "Ah, I remember now," she replied with a grin. "I was watching one of your Lessons at Hyra's urging, to get an idea of what I might expect to look for in a GOOD Weyrlingmaster should I ever become Southern's Senior Weyrwoman." Her smile was wry, indicating she had never expected to hold that position, even temporarily, and since Southern had five Queens in all, Aketh being the youngest, this was no big surprise. When the Amethyst fluttered over, the Pearlrider grinned and greeted her, then watched as she soared back to her human. "She's quite pretty."

"Yes, it can take a while for people to get used to a change," Lenara agreed with the Kingrider. "Some habits are hard to break."
A good Weyrlingmaster? "Well, I certainly appreciate Lady Hyra's high opinions of me. I shall do my best to live up to them," she added with a soft laugh. "Pretty little thing Rose is, yes. And she knows it too. She's quite a bit more vain than some of the others I've seen. Tends to act a bit like a Pearl when she feels like it." Rose seemed to growl a bit, then she just flew off. Lenara rolled her eyes. She'd be fine. Just like a normal girl, she didn't like it when people called her stuck-up or self-centered, even if it was true.
"Oh, yes, you don't have a Candidatemaster, do you?" she asked suddenly. "If you will allow me, I can attempt to give them some basic lessons in dragon-care? Starting, I think, with bathing and oiling, most likely in the morning." She already started planning things for the Candidates that had come from another world. It was strange, the mere idea of another world... "Of course, if you already have plans, I do understand," she added quickly.

Lin winked at her, then turned her head ever so slightly, her eyes going distant. After a moment, she chuckled softly and then looked back. "Aketh remembers you as well," she said mildly, "now that she knows who you are. And she's relieved we got you and not some, how did she put it, wet-behind-the-ears-Hatchling-who-will-likely-RUIN-my-babies." Her dark eyes twinkled with amusement, and she watched the Amethyst flutter off in a huff, grinning at Lenara's description of her. "Although I think she's more worried about her two daughters being 'ruined' than the others."
A frown touched her lips as she thought of those two Queens. How would they get along? And how would the leadership of this new Weyr be decided when the time came? It had already been made clear that Aketh would be returning to Southern when her daughters were old enough to take over, but which one would? As Lenara spoke of a CandidateMaster, she gave a faint smile. "We're looking, but for now, I would truly appreciate if you DID do lessons, especially for Kaira and her surviving students."

"Ah, yes, R'kal will do fine taking over for me, especially with my teacher there to assist him should he need it," Lenara admitted. "However, the boy is still too gentle to be a Weyrlingmaster in a new Weyr. And with a pair of Queens, rather than just one, there is even more need for Riders with experience." A frown broke onto the Weyrwoman's face, but Lenara allowed her time to think.
"I was unaware that there were other Candidates here," she admitted softly. "It does make sense, though, especially if this is going to be a permanent Weyr. Perhaps I can convince a few Riders I know back at Igen to come here and assist in the construction." She was simply thinking now. "I'm sure K'tal and P'nta would be glad to help, they never seem to have enough to do." She laughed softly.
"Oh, as for the lessons, I will probably stick to the basics first, just so they know what to do when they first Impress, the ones that will," she added, speaking again to Lin. "Bathing and oiling, Hatching procedures, the simplicities. However, if there are any specific lessons you wish me to teach, you need only say the word."

"Candidates have been coming in from other Weyrs, now that Aketh's Clutch is confirmed alive," Lin explained. "Especially the girls. Who wouldn't want a chance at a Queen who may one day rule her Weyr, after all?" She chuckled softly, then cocked her head slightly and continued listening, nodding thoughtfully. "My main concern, especially for the off-worlders, is that they are informed how to BEHAVE. The Hatchlings are unpredictable, after all, and some of these have faced death and defeated it. I don't want them losing that battle because some over eager kiddo decided they HAD to be a rider, despite a dragonet's thoughts on the matter."

"Ah, well, that makes sense when you put it that way," Lenara agreed. Then the young Weyrwoman voiced her concerns about the off-worlders. "Yes, of course. That is why I plan for the first lesson to include Hatching Day behaviour, as well as a few other basics that they will need to know for that day. Even when the conditions are normal the Hatchlings can be unpredictable. I know there was at least one boy in Iabureth's Clutch that almost died from his wounds because he simply didn't move fast enough." A sudden thought struck her.
"Weyrwoman, did you want to hold a Touching of the eggs for the Candidates here?" she asked after a moment. "You would only need to be present to supervise, I will handle the Candidates themselves. Though I know there are a few of the younger off-worlders that are simply not old enough yet, and the ones that were more seriously injured will not be able to Stand for a while, possibly until the unHatched Queens are old enough to Rise and Clutch."

"I'm reluctant to do th-"
Let them. They need to know. WE need to know. The sudden inclusion of Aketh came with the appearance of the pale blue Pearl and the disappearance of Hyzeth and J'mael, who had gone to watch the eggs at her insistence. Lin looked up at her Queen, who cocked her head slightly and rumbled a greeting to Iabureth, then looked down to the two humans. The very lateness of their growth spurt is why we must do everything as soon as possible, but we also must do it RIGHT.
"But couldn't it cause an accidental Pre-Impression, given how FAST they're growing?" Lin said worriedly, and the Queen rumbled soothingly, but didn't actually answer beyond that. Lin shrugged and looked to Lenara. "I guess that's your answer," she said wryly.
