She was free.
That thought kept slipping into the young woman's mind as she sat passively on a large boulder overlooking the sea, her feet hanging over the edge and touched by the waves coming in. Nearby her babysitter was fishing in one of the many tide pools along the beach, and she chuckled as she watched his antics. The little Sapphire was the same one from before, and seemed to belong to Joana Ista, the Healer taking care of Aura and many of the others, working under Master Weirek. Aura was allowed to go out and exercise, so long as she didn't push herself too hard, and she knew better than to do so. The one time she had, the Sapphire had communicated it back to his Mistress, and Aura had gotten an earful when she'd returned, as well as a threat that if she continued to do so, she would be confined to that blasted bed once more. Seeing as she had almost died, Aura could accept that, and had promised to keep an ear to her little guardian and rest when he urged it. He was quite sensitive to her, surprisingly so, and she respected his ability to know when she was tiring.
He came back and settled near her, munching happily on his catch, and she chuckled and reached out to pet his tiny head. "All you do is ride on my shoulder. How can you work up an appetite," she said teasingly, and he chattered at her happily, then continued eating as she looked over the ocean once more, examining this new place. It wasn't so different from Earth, really, although the atmosphere was a little heavier, and the plants were more blue than green. She'd been told that it was likely due to a difference in composition from their Earth plants, and she was willing to accept that without questions. And the dragons... She'd probably annoyed many of the riders she'd been pestering with questions, although several of them had seemed only amused and had patiently answered her as best they could. She'd not been brave enough to question the Pearl-, Diamond- and Onyxriders, feeling they were too far above her, but the lower ranked ones she'd had no problem approaching, even the Topaz- and Aquamarineriders.

A leisurely stroll along the beach was all the break he needed.
At least that was what Kyravu had convinced himself when he had woken up feeling like he hadn't slept in all his turns. The strange new people who had arrived in a burning blaze of glory were all the Weyr seemed to talk about...aside from the late, but confirmed to be alive clutch that was resting on the Sands. And he hadn't had a chance to stop and think - between reading up on what it was to be a candidate and infirmary duties, he hadn't really had the chance to process what he felt about it all. A certain shyness had taken it's hold when he thought about questioning the new people. They knew so little of Pern and yet...they knew so much more. Could they bring new healing techniques? New ideals? What would it mean for the Pernese way of life? There could potentially be a lot of conflict between the two peoples, as they were released to explore Pern...He ran a hand over his eyes.
This was exactly why Kyravu had taken the time out. Away from the worries of others, the curiosity the questions...
Of course, as fate would have it, his legs had taken him almost directly to one of the new arrivals - and he stopped a short distance away, suddenly feeling very foolish. He blinked and raised a hand in greeting, before gesturing vaguely to the firelizard near her.
"Is he yours?" Kyravu asked, mostly so he wouldn't stand in an awkward silence or seem ignorant by passing her by. "You are one of the injured, aren't you? How are you feeling?" He added as an after thought. If he was going to run across one of the Weyr's patients, he might as well enquire.

She heard the crunch of footfalls in the sand and turned her head, emerald eyes falling on the young man and instantly turning wary. Though she knew instinctively he wouldn't hurt her-his shy manner and his green Healer knots indicated as much-he was still male, and therefore still fell under that umbrella of caution. His question had her blinking, and she looked to the Sapphire, who crooned soothingly to her, letting her know she'd read the man correctly. "No, actually. He belongs to the Healer caring for me," she answered after a moment, then a wry smile touched her lips for his next question. They were all over the place, and constantly questioning her, she thought with amusement.
"I'm fine. Little Orti here keeps me from pushing myself." She stroked the Sapphire's head, and he chirped at the young man, then just watched him as he finished his fish and returned to Aura's shoulder. "I'm Aura. And you are?" she inquired, curious now about this stranger and wondering if maybe he could answer some of her questions.

"Ah." Kyravu said. He couldn't recall which healers specifically had firelizards...but then he had not been at this new Weyr long himself. He gestured to a nearby boulder.
"May I?" He asked, gingerly stepping up to sit on it. He studied the sapphire firelizard for a moment, before nodding. "He has been well trained then, to be able to tell when someone is doing more than what their current state allows. We could do with more firelizards like that - but then what use would us healers be?" Kyravu said. He folded his arms across his stomach, still eyeing the firelizard. Maybe he should invest into getting one of his own...it seemed like it could be useful to have one. Especially if they could keep an eye on your patients for you. Her introduction brought him off any train of thought about firelizards, then, and he bowed his head.
"A pleasure to meet you, Aura. I am Kyravu...a healer, though I expect you've learned enough about Healers recently to be able to tell that." He said, gesturing vaguely at his knots before refolding his arms. "I am also a candidate for the Weyr, for the next clutch." He added. "Have you...any of you thought about what you are going to do now you are...well. Here." He asked, tilting his head. He was curious to see if they would choose crafts or just try their best to repair their...whatever it was that had brought them here.

Unwanted, possibly, but a tiny little blue flit popped out of between near the two Candidates. She was a tiny Lapis, only recently Hatched but already decently close to full size. She quickly dashed into a small cave in the nearby cliff-face. This was followed a little bit later by a bark, and a laugh. A large black puppy came running out of the trees, and Eternity emerged next. "Lucy, come here," she said quickly. The black puppy turned and went to her side, sitting next to the girl. She put her hands on her knees to catch her breath, then stood upright again.
"Oh, Aura, you're allowed outside now? That's great," she said to the other girl. She looked at the boy. "I know you, too... You were one of the ones that looked at my leg as it healed, I'm pretty sure... Well, anyway, I'm Eternity. It's nice to meet you." She turned back to the puppy. "Alright. Find Siren," she said. The puppy barked once and started scenting the air. She ran off toward the cave where the little Lapis had taken refuge, but was stopped by the simple lack of a foothold.
"Hey, Siren, I found you," Eternity said when she stood next to Lucy again. The Lapis darted out of the small cave and circled around Eternity's head before landing on her shoulder. The girl laughed again, giving the little blue-and-gold flitlet a quick head scratch before standing next to the other Candidates.
"Oh, I heard our Weyrlingmistress just got here, from Igen if I remember right," she told them suddenly. "I saw her with Weyrwoman Lin and the Weyrleader, but I didn't want to get too close and interrupt. Her Aquamarine dragoness is so pretty!" She spun in a slow circle. "I'm excited to find out what's in the eggs. What about you Aura?" She suddenly looked at the boy.
"I'm sorry! I didn't catch your name... I tend to ramble a bit when I get excited..." she admitted, cheeks reddening slightly.

"Sure, go ahead," she replied to his query, then shrugged slightly. "Joana's consistent with him, which you'd have to be with any creature in training, I would guess. He is a lot smarter than I expected, I admit." As he continued, she inclined her head slightly. "A pleasure to meet you. I envy you, you know. I'm not allowed to try for a dragon until my back heals completely." She sighed longingly, then shrugged. "But it is what it is. At least I'm alive, right?" For his next question, she cocked her head slightly, considering, but didn't get a chance to answer before the flitlet showed up, her eyes twitching to it curiously.
The arrival of Lucy, then Eternity, had her smiling, and she raised a hand in greeting to the other young woman, then hid her chuckle as she rambled on about things, her emerald gaze flittering with amusement. "My goodness. You're as scatterbrained as one of those Emerald flits," she teased her, her tone and her smile telling Eternity she wasn't serious in the slightest. "I am excited, yes, and curious too. I keep hearing all these things about Hatching Days, but seeing one will definitely be different."

Any response Kyravu was about to give about being a candidate was dashed away - distracted by the sudden appearance of another firelizard, young if he could correctly tell, who darted off. It was followed by a puppy and another of the strange new people, who called the firelizard back and started talking to Aura. She mentioned that he had looked at her leg...admittedly, Kyravu could not recall that, but then there had been so many injuries...he simply nodded.
"We healers were overrun at the time...how is your leg?" He asked, before adding; "It's a pleasure to meet you too."
His question about what Aura planned to do now had been avoided, but from her comment about candidacy..he figured she wanted to be a dragonrider, if given the chance. He blinked at the other woman, she certainly seemed...excitable. He hid a frown, instead resolving to just watch the exchange, until he was brought back into the conversation.
"Oh, Kyravu." He supplied with another nod. Then he looked at the two women. "This clutch has already taken such a long time to show signs of life - perhaps you will get your chance to stand, Aura. Or perhaps it will hatch soon so you can at least experience it...there will be other hatchings, after all." He said. Then he looked to Eternity. "Are you planning to Stand?" He asked.

"Hey, I'm not that bad!" Eternity laughed. "It's kind of hard to think straight when you've got another mind that's insisting on playing hide-and-seek, though it's good tracking practice for Lucy here." The puppy in question barked once. "Yeah, it's a lot better. They took the stitches out last week," she said in answer to his question. She took a breath, trying to calm her racing heart. She'd run a fair portion of the way here, after all.
"Yeah, I'm hoping to," she said to Kyravu. "If only for my sister... She would've loved this world..." Her eyes darkened slightly, and she looked away when she began talking about her sister. She sat down in the grass, lacing her fingers through it. "I come from a pretty big family, but... It's a bit surprising, but it hasn't really been that hard to adjust to being alone here... Oh, my sister Serenity was one of the ones that... That died in the crash..." It still hurt to admit it. "She was the one that was all into dragons and mythical creatures... If only she'd been able to see this place, she would've loved it..." She loked out over the cliff, toward the horizon, and a small smile crept onto her face. She missed her sister, but little Siren that sat on her shoulder... The little Lapis was certainly a helping hand when she was needed.

Aura smiled encouragingly as Eternity spoke of what she wished to do now, listening to her and hiding her wince, though an empathetic smile was given the other girl. Losing her sister, who she'd obviously been close to, had hurt Eternity, Aura could see that. But the flitlet-a Lapis if she was recalling her colors right-seemed to be a balm to her wounded heart. And when she Impressed-for Aura had a strong feeling she WOULD-her heart would heal even further.
"Siren's a lovely one," she said gently. "I'd love to have one of my own someday, but for now, I'll settle for Orti's companionship." The Sapphire chirred indignantly and she shushed him, reminding him lightly that Joana was his person, regardless of the fact he was currently baby sitting Aura. She then looked back and watched them quietly. "Kyravu, how long have you been a Healer?" she asked curiously, wondering how their Apprenticeship system worked. Maybe, if she didn't prove worthy of a dragon, she could find her place somewhere else on this world.

Kyravu nodded at Eternity. "That is good to hear - if your leg gives you any trouble though, pain or the wound reopening, just let me know or go to the infirmary. We are always happy to help you, and are never too busy." He said. As she began talking about her sister, Kyravu fell silent, listening. When she finished, he watched her for a moment. "Just remember, your sister is never truly gone. I can't pretend to know her, I have only just met you, but...She lives this world through you, and will guide you through it when you have need." He said, his voice soft. He offered Eternity a smile, before turning to look at Aura.
"If I hear of a clutch I will be sure to let you know. Having a firelizard suits you - even if Orti is not your own, you make quite the pair." Kyravu said. Then he paused at her question, tilting his head. "I started learning how to be a Healer at the age of ten turns. So that means...eleven turns I have been a healer. Though I have only been a Journeyman for two turns." Kyravu said. Then he nodded towards the pair. "You both would undoubtedly be welcomed into any craft, should you choose to go that way. Though you might be older than the usual apprentice age, you might also have some fresh ideas to bring to the crafts. I think even as a rider, after you have graduated, you can still learn a craft if you so wish, but...that I guess you would have to double check with the Weyrling Mistress, now she has arrived." Kyravu said. Then he paused again, before his voice went soft.
"Even if you ended up without a craft or a dragon, there is still drudge work. Being a drudge doesn't make you any less important than the next person. And there is always room in the infirmary for those who just wish to help out without committing to becoming a Healer."
