Name: Duncan MacDougall
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Rank: Pern - Candidate :: Earth - Ex-con/Mechanic
Appearance:
Duncan is a stunning, Scottish male. Standing 6 ft 3 in and weighing close to 190 pounds of hard, toned muscles. Pale blue orbs and dark red hair cause Duncan to stand out, but the longer red locks are also something that make him seem a little more approachable. A constant stubble is always at his chin and though he's not overly hairy, he does have quiet a bit of body hair covering his legs, arms, and chest. Of course, the life he has lived for the past five years has taken its toll on him and he has a few scars and wounds here and there, but nothing that can't be covered. Riddled with muscles, he was able to take care of himself while locked up, not having to rely on stronger, bigger men to care for him.
On his back, spread in a slight arc from one shoulder to the other, is clan MacDougall's motto "Buaidh no bas" in a beautiful script. It means Victory or Death. This tattoo is a prison tattoo, but it is actually very elegantly done.
Personality:
Duncan is a little hard to place. He has a sense of humor, laughs with a good joke, jest, or rough housing, but he's Scottish . . . so he can take it a bit to far and not really mean to. Clan MacDougall is a very family oriented clan, but there are a lot of big, brawny men in the clan and these men have gotten bored before and knocked out some teeth playing around. His accent is almost gone, but it does rear its head when he tired, stressed, or just waking up. He's sweet hearted and loves deeply. Of course, family is important to him, so the idea on Pern of Riders giving up their children to crechewoman has him a little baffled and against it. Its probably one of his biggest fears if he does Impress a dragon, that he won't have time for a child if one ever comes around. Loyal and brave, he doesn't back down from a fight, nor does he start one that doesn't need to be started. The muscle he has, a bit of brains left in his skull, he also has. Fair and smart, he can figure out what he needs to do to figure out fixing a piece of machine.
History:
Born
Duncan's mother was a victim of a vicious attack that left her pregnant, not married, and alone. Luckily, his mother was of the clan MacDougall and when time came for the baby to be born, she found her family at the hospital with her, welcoming the new clan member into their family. His mother named him after her uncle, who had been like a father to her, and was like a father to him as he grew. Sadly, his mother passed away shortly after naming him.
Age 3
From a young age, Duncan is raised with love and care by his Uncle Duncan, who seemed to take over the leading role in the clan after the death of his brother who lead the clan.
Age 9-14
Duncan begins to act out against his clan and family. It seems that his anger stems from missing his mother, and in the end, it stirs him toward a dark and troubled path. His uncle and family did their best to help him, each and every person opening their doors to him, but youth spoke before brains and Duncan walked a dark road for a time.
Age 15
Duncan runs with the wrong crowd and ends up the scapegoat of a robbery gone wrong. Two of his 'friends' decided to break into a business man's home and steal his car. Duncan was suppose to just be there to watch, but when things went bad, he tried to help the old man who his friends were trying to steal from. His friends had awoken the business man and the man came at them with a gun. A fight broke out and shots were fired; Duncan ran into the house to see his friends standing over the older man, a bullet wound in the left side of the man's chest. The two young men ran but Duncan tried to help the man. When the police got there, they found him cradling the man's head, the gun by his thigh, and blood on his hands. He ended up being charged with voluntary manslaughter, even though he tried to tell his side of the story. Because of his youth and the fact that his family did everything they could to help him, Duncan was only sentenced to six years.
Age 15-20
Duncan spends five years in a Scottish prison, where he begins working toward a technician degree. He graduated from an online college. Of course, straight out of prison, he had experience working in the auto shop in the prison, but no one wanted to hire an ex-con. Luckily, Clan MacDougall came to the rescue. They were able to help him get a position on the Aries as a mechanic. Of course, his past had to be told to those that needed to know, but for the most part, his prison past was unknown to the crew and students, something he didn't think as right, but felt he would tell those on the shuttle with him once he had a chance.
Age 21
His Uncle Duncan got him in a position as a mechanic on board the Aries. He reported to the space center and arrived just in time to be put on the last shuttle out. When they took off, Duncan had settled himself back, after of course going over the shuttle from top to bottom. Whoever called out the comment about a black hole had Duncan waking from a gentle sleep, of course, how he slept on a space ship in the middle of vast open space, but after having five years to learn to sleep whenever you can, he did just that. With the craft going down, Duncan did what he could to keep it in the skies, but after one very bad explosion there was nothing he could do for the ship. Instead, he had turned his attention to the people and the students that were on the shuttle for the experience.
When the shuttled crashed landed, Duncan wasn't hurt badly, and he turned his attention to helping others. His first experience with the dragons in this new world knocked him to the ground. He had never thought that he'd be standing before a breath taking creature, a young man trying to drag him to his feet, while his mind was spinning from the sight of the towering dragon. After all was settled, many of the students were approached by some of the dragonriders and informed that they had what it took to become a Candidate. Duncan didn't think himself one of those luckily few, so he spent a lot of time trying to fix the Aries at least until a little female walked up to him and informed him he would be Standing on the Sands before the next clutch. Something clicked in his mind at the mention of this. He now had something to live for, other than metal and gears.
At Aketh's clutch, toward the end of the Hatching, Duncan found himself looking at a pale blue hued Topaz that had tumbled out of his shell and landed on his back. It seemed the little guy thought he was walking on the ceiling, but after righting himself, Irith learned that he was right side. A new found bond has formed between the two and even though they came from two totally different worlds, D'can couldn't be happier with how things ended up.
