It was quiet, calm, and Kaira was wandering along the beach, her eyes scanning the horizon. She'd been asked to gather some medicinal herbs as well as bring home some of the small fingerfish and darters from the tide pools. She was happy to do the chore, glad they at least trusted her ability to figure out what was used for medicine and what was not. It had been carefully described to her several times, and she had memorized what they had told her and was armed with some clippers, some nets for the fish and the memory of what she was needing to bring back. Humming softly, she padded through the pale sand, her hazel eyes darting this way and that as she searched for the tide pools, also scanning the cliffs for the stairway she'd been told of. She wasn't sure she should be getting the herbs first, so she had decided to get the fish.
She was silent, which was why she heard the chattering and screeching, and her lips twitched into a frown. What was that? she wondered, dropping into a crouch and sneaking forwards behind some boulders. Her eyes widened, and she ducked down, her back to the boulder, and just listened to the chaos of the fire-lizard Hatching she'd come upon. She sat there for a good fifteen minutes, just listening and waiting, not wishing to upset the black Pearl running the show. As soon as things quieted down, she snuck her head over the boulder, making sure the beach was empty. Seeing it was, save for empty shells and a few she guessed were likely duds, she came around the boulder and knelt down beside them, examining them curiously. Looking at the dud eggs, she frowned, then looked closer at the largest of those remaining. Was she imagining things or was it?
It was! She swiftly picked up the egg, hearing wherries coming, and ran for it, ignoring the sounds behind her. She was a little disappointed she'd not been able to grab the other 'duds' to be sure if they were alive as well, but Wherries were nasty, vicious, ugly beasts, and as she skidded around another boulder and dropped, she heard them squabbling and squawking, fighting over the remains. Shivering, she looked down at the egg she held, shuddering and shivering violently now, and saw it beginning to crack. Continuing to hold it in one hand, she searched swiftly for some food, knowing that would both keep the Hatchling silent and also would Bond it to her. Listening still, she found a sandwich she'd made that morning and pulled it out, just as the top of the egg broke off. Before the one inside could begin crying out, she offered some of the sandwich, and felt it pulled from her fingers. She fed the hatchling, feeling the Bond forming, without ever seeing it, as it chose to remain in the egg and eat there. Once the sandwich was gone, a little head popped out, and the baby looked to Kaira with contented blue-green eyes. She could feel that the little female was sleepy, and she gently coaxed her out of her shell and into her shirt pocket, noticing only peripherally that she appeared to be a Diamond before she disappeared into it and Kaira closed it.
She had to get away from the threat, she thought, sneaking slowly away, her ears tuned to the wherries, her eyes watching the area in front of her to make sure there weren't more.
Several hours later, she was back at the Weyr, having completed her missions to the satisfaction of those who had sent her. She went back to her room and opened her pocket, revealing her new companion, who she had not shown anyone before returning to her room. The little Diamond had somehow managed to sleep through all of it, but Kaira could feel her waking and was ready with more food. "Here you go, Isis," she said lightly, and the little Queen chirped at her happily and munched on the offered meatroll.
