Tobias is a strong youth. Well built with a medium build. He is lean with wide shoulders. He is adjusting well through his awkward stage as he grows from being a boy into a man. His hair is not very short. There is some substance to it but not long enough to distract his vision. His hair and eyes are dark brown and serious looking. His resting expression might make him seem cautious and alert, maybe even slightly intense. He does well to keep himself fit, healthy and looking as presentable as he can.

Despite his stoic, almost aloof countenance with others, Tobias is actually very protective and kind. Simple things bring it to the fore and if someone chance to see him, they might wonder if his heart is softer than he lets himself appear. Helping a young child fix his toy or helping an oldster in a task or sitting there listening politely as they ramble on and on without seeming end. Though he doesn't wear his emotions so openly he isn't just kind but he is respectful too. There are the rare moments when his long patience is tampered with a little too long and he becomes aggressive. Sometimes to the point of needing to be restrained. This coupled with his Head-strong trait, might put others off but it is only a horrible effect of his years of abuse and neglect by his parents. If he is shown nurturing and kindness this might get better over time. Being punctual is very important to him. His long experience at strict boarding schools has instilled this trait within him. Self-discipline to get his studies done has melded itself into other areas of life too. He is a trouble youth but one with a good core.

Tobias was born in a small town in the Midwest, United States on Earth. You wouldn't know it to look at his family though. They have the largest house in town. He's always getting sent off to boarding schools all across the country and abroad. When he's not in school he is usually shipped to various summer camps that would keep him out from underfoot. Or provide him with a "large range of life experiences for his own good". Also for his 'own good' were the hard times when he was at home with his father and oblivious, dinner-engagement-minded mother. Beaten and locked in closets wasn't even the half of it. But it was those experiences that really made him who he was. And it made him glad for the times when he was sent away. But that in itself was a bitter-sweet thing. He just wanted to be loved. As each year that went by, he began to believe less and less that he ever would be. He had to stand on his own two feet and not worry about the love of parents he would never have. His latest trip to 'summer camp' had him being shuttled into space for space camp. He was pretty excited about this latest venture as it was a big deal in his life. Not many parents could afford such a thing. He did not for one moment believe they did this for him though. It was probably just a status symbol to have a son go to space.  Little did anyone know, he would never be coming back home again. A freak accident sent the station he was on hurtling towards certain doom. A black hole.

When he woke up, all he knew was pain, strange antiseptic smells and alien surroundings. Where was he? What had happened? Tobias had no idea at the time that he and the others had come through the black hole and landed in a place thought to exist only in fantasy. Pern.
