Name:
Varin
Age:
47 turns
Gender:
Male/hetero
Rank:
Candidate Master
Appearance:
Varin is the sort of man who could easily break many hearts without. He was the typical tall, dark and handsome as a younger man, but now his hair
is touched with salt and pepper and there are a few more wrinkles than he would really like on his face. His dark brown eyes seem at times to hold such sadness, but also such hope and wisdom. He is a man who is never forgotten. He is tall, but not overly so at 5'10, medium build, but he walks with a cane since he broke his right leg
a few turns back.
Personality:
Warm, outgoing, friendly, wise, honest. Firm, stickler for duty and routine
Varin had always been a nice guy. He is warm, gentle and friendly. Never one to turn away a broken heart or someone in need, he is the sort of man many would look for as their confidant, their counsel. He has a deep, quiet wisdom that has come with the hard turns in his younger days. He has not had an easy life, but instead of allowing it to turn him bitter and angry he had channelled the energy into making him a better, stronger man.
He has a calming way, there is an aura of trust that oozes from this man. He isnt a miracle worker, he makes mistakes and gets angry and annoyed, but he ever seem to stay that way for long. He has a real sense of peace about him. He has time and patience for those who would accept his teaching, but those who waste his time or others will find themselves ignored and turned away with a firm, fair hand. He will not tolerate bullies and will stand up for the down trodden every time.
He is a firm, at times strict teacher. He knows the heartaches that come with being a dragonrider. He isnt afraid to make those in his care think seriously about what they are doing. Dragons are not pets, not something to take for granted. He lost his Onyx twenty turns ago, but he misses him each and every day. he believes in teaching the candidates the tough truth of being a rider.
When he lost his Xvenoth he thought his world has collapsed. He spent days mourning the dragon, he very nearly lost his mind to the grief, but he fought back. Someone gave him two flitters eggs, hoping it might help. It did the trick, it turned the man from despairing to living for the future of his two flits. He is a man many trust, he is reliable, decent, truthful. Not afraid to speak the truth he will tell you if he feels what you are doing is wrong. He is a man you know you will get and honest answer from. It might not be what you wanted to hear, but it will always be the truth.
History:
Varin was born in a small Hold that provided the Weyr with herdbeasts. His father was a Master farmer and Varin was apprenticed to him at the young age of 8 turns.
He always loved dragons, but there had never been a rider in his family so he never thought about becoming one, but he dreamt about it. At night, in his sleep he flew with the dragons, the dreams of a young boy like so many others.
He worked hard, learning all he could from his father. He was 15 when he father took him to the Weyr for the first time, driving a herd of 100 herdbeasts. It was an exciting time in the young man's life. he went back regularly after that, enjoying the magnificent dragons and their riders. he always found them friendly and open people. He felt at home at the Weyr.
When he was 20 he was at the Weyr when a hatching started. Varin was invited to watch, along with his father. They sat in the stands with the other visitors, clapping with each impression. A large smoky gray onyx hatched and made his way towards the stands. When Varin heard V'rin, he knew it was him. The black dragon was called Xvenoth and the two were welcomed into the Weyr as his father watched with tear-filled, proud eyes.
So began the most exciting if tiring turns of his life. Weyrlinghood was an experience he never forgot. He had no candidate training so he was thrown into things at the deep end. But he soaked up what he was told like a spange. Xvenoth grew huge. They were a popular pair, always there, watching the others. They were exactly what an Onyx pair should be. Xvenoth could be obnoxious, aloof and awkward, V'rin was the one to smooth over ruffled feathers and sooth frayed nerves.
They were going to go places many felt. V'rin developed the right traits for weyrleader. But things changed in their seventh turn together. It was during a training exercise. Xvenoth and his wing were using firestone. He dove under a younger dragon, the dragon flamed, Xvenoth was caught across his back and tail, V'rin somehow escaped any injury, but his beloved dragon was fatally injured. He managed to land to let his rider off, then he betweened, leaving a devastated V'rin.
The next few sevendays were a haze. He was half dead, a man with no purpose and a void in his heart and mind. Then someone gave him two flitter eggs. He starred at them, what did he want with flitters when he had lost his beloved Xvendoth. But when they hatched, revealing a tiny little emerald and a larger sapphire, he realised they needed him, so he slowly began to move on, Xvendoth would never be forgotten, but Varin was not going to fade away with grief.
Naming them proved hard, he wasnt sure what to call them so didnt to begin with, he watched them as he fed and oiled them, got to know their personalities. The emerald he called Gem. She was very dainty, a gentle little thing who never seemed far from him. The sapphire he called Dak. The bright blue flitter seemed a little dazed and confused at times, so Dak seemed appropriate for him. He train them to respond to him and was rewarded with two faithful companions.
He remained at the Weyr and began to help the old candidate master with his charges. Varin enjoyed teaching, filling their heads with the wonder and sadness of dragonkind and being connected to such a magnificent creature in such a way that it tore your life apart if that bond was ripped apart. But he nurtured and cared for them, eager to mould those who would partner the future dragons.
When the old Master stepped down Varin accepted the role. He was given another two flitter eggs, this time both male, a blue topaz and a quartz. He called them Nip and Tuck. Nip, the topaz never seemed to keep still, and Tuck had this way of tucking himself into the smallest places. So now he had Gem, Dak, Nip and Tuck. When he started as Candidate Master the first thing he did was teach Nip and Tuck to guard the doors to the dormitories. Dak would often sit in the middle of the floor watching the doors, but Nip and Tuck were his guard flits. Gem never left his side.
When the Aries crashed he was amazed. He helped the rescue and is looking forward to working with Lenara teaching these new comers the joys of Pern and what it means to be a dragonrider.
